It is wonderful how we live in a world of contradictions! No one seems to support the concept of genetically modified foods but we have no problem with bacteria that have been modified to produce Insulin! We enjoy our crème brulee’s but add sweetener to our tea or coffee, and it was Picasso who stated that he had spent his whole life learning to paint like a child! Ironically no such latitudes exist in the world of winemaking for there are few products which enjoy greater honesty than wine. For some reason it suffers from statutory controls which beat most other food products. While alchemy has little place in the modern world it is still fortunate that the winemakers palate and mysteries of winemaking remain the ultimate creative tool in wine design.

Competing in this world of winemaking offers the potential excitement of a kaleidoscope of rewards - perhaps the most gratifying is the regular hand to hand commendations received from our many supporters and visitor. These appreciations are from time to time topped up with show stopping accolades or what I call “golden awards” and during these last six months we have been dished out with “a cup runneth over” of super kicks and mentions which will be elaborated on within these pages.

I recently analyzed our history of top awards for Pinot Noir and managed to proudly list ten entries since year 2000. To add to this we heard two weeks ago that we had received the Decanter SA trophy for best Pinot at this year’s 2009 competition in London. The question arises where lies our advantage in the growing of this grape? Let me throw some light on the subject: In the 1980’s Prof Eben Archer of Stellenbosch University dept. of Viticulture initiated a research project surrounding the plant density benefits of Pinot noir. After a number of years he published results which undeniably showed a direct correlation between increased colour and tannin levels against greater planting densities. The question begs as to why such key information has enjoyed so little applied acceptance. The two most acclaimed red wine regions in the world – namely Bordeaux and Burgundy have stuck by this method of close plantings which does rather suggest that our following of this doctrine is not out of sink. In fact we practice this modus operandi with all our cultivars. The science behind such practice goes roughly along the lines of creating a diminished root zone for more competition but developing a larger leaf surface area which has direct bearing on quality!

My early years in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley convinced me that I had no desire to look beyond these boundaries for a finer place to grow quality wine grapes. There are those who detract from the acceptance of the mystique of “Terroir”, but I remain a true “Terroirist” and believe emphatically that the Pinot noir grape is the most terroir specific of all varieties. This approach to best viticultural practice on top of best location offers true advantage and vindicates the magic of terroir! There is no doubt that our spot in this beautiful valley is a classic example of great Pinot “terroir”.

Having just given away our inner most secret I still believe very few growers will adopt such changes – this remains an industry which is dictated to by growers rather than winemakers? The truth is that the better a region fairs the greater the recognition for that area, with consequent rewards for all –particularly in land values!

Personally it is simply the very basic satisfaction of being able to share with friends and followers an opportunity to offer a wine (in this case Pinot noir) which provides enormous pleasure. I thank you for sharing and joining me in this privilege. Your support and appreciation is what makes my role so truly satisfying and rewarding and for us what this business is all about.
Perhaps best described as a “Non-Nervous” vintage! There have been few years which have offered such kind weather conditions. Essentially dry throughout the growing season with almost zero grape spoilage. This after a very wet early growing season where vineyard management forced key attention to pest control. The new vintage wines are displaying great promise and threaten to be every bit as good as the highly rated vintages from 2007 and 2008 (if not better). The first wine to have been bottled is the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc which is right on the “button”! This points to 2009 offering success with both the white and red wines!
It is always with such gratitude and humility when we receive these worldwide acclaimed awards. Receiving these prestigious awards comforts that we are performing well, encourages and motivates us to continue to keep striving to do better and humbles knowing the increased competition we face.

In the January 09 issue of Wine Spectator, the 2007 Galpin Peak Pinot Noir scored an impressive 91 points. Described as “stylish, with long lingering notes of black cherry, spice and sweet earth”, reviewer acclaimed wine writer James Molesworth commented that the 2007 edition is “THE BEST BOTTLING YET FROM THIS PINOT SPECIALIST”. Using its 100-point scale system, points over 90 are viewed as “outstanding”!

In addition to this fantastic achievement, Matthew Jukes – wine writer for the Daily Mail chose our Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2007 as one of his top 50 SA wines out of 4000 wines represented at Cape Wine 08! Describing ours with another two of South Africa’s finest Pinot noirs as follows “With more horse-power than my other two Pinots, Galpin Peak is a youthful brute, but there is serious breeding here and this trio is the finest ever from the Cape.”

Decanter World Wine Awards 2009 has awarded our Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2008 with the REGIONAL TROPHY FOR SOUTH AFRICAN PINOT NOIR. This competition attracted more entries this year than any other wine competition in the world, cementing its position as the world’s biggest wine competition. The 08 vintage is no doubt one of the fruitiest presentations of Galpin Peak in many years. It has an appealing fresh fruit structure with accentuated length and elegance on the palate. Fully dry, but soft & gentle with a touch of crispness. Flavours of cherry, blackberry & violets followed by an earthy spiciness. It is in harmony with its expectations and does not disappoint in its rich candid finish! One can expect increased elegance and softness with aging.

Our unique Italian, French red blend Hannibal has also achieved acclaim in the USA! Our Hannibal 2005 with the blend comprising of 44% Sangiovese; 27% Pinot Noir; 14% Nebbiolo; 10% Barbera and 5% Shiraz was awarded A DOUBLE GOLD MEDAL of only 24 double gold medals at the Houston Rodeo International Wine Competition 08.

Our recent accolades highlight Bouchard Finlayson’s abilities to not only produce world-class Pinot Noir but to also offer outstanding whites. The Blanc de Mer 2008 has been given the title BEST NEW WORLD WHITE by Steven Spurriers which was featured in his ‘Spurriers World’ column in the Decanter May 2009 edition. Steven Spurrier describes this blend of 49% Riesling, 22% Viognier, 15% Chenin Blanc, 12% Sauvignon and 2% Chardonnay as “Citrussy, lively, fleshy yet zippy fruit. Great with seafood, especially for those bored with mono-varietal whites.” Platter Wine guide 2008 has endorsed our Walker Bay Sauvignon blanc 08 with its 4 star rating!

Further ratings by James Molesworth see our Sans Barrique Chardonnay 07 and Walker Bay Sauvignon blanc 07 achieving over 88 points in the ‘Top Value wines for 08 under $20’ category in the February 09 Edition of Wine Spectator.

Locally the WINE magazine has rated our Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2008 with 4.5 stars! An outstanding achievement! Harald Bresselschmidt of Aubergine restaurant fame in Cape Town recommends springbok with a red currant jus and cep mushrooms. “The venison and mushrooms pick up the wild flavours of the wine while the jus highlights the fruit.” Our Chardonnay’s have also received acclaim with the Missionvale Chardonnay 2008 as well as our Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay 2007 rated with an outstanding 4 stars in their March 09 edition. The Judges had the following to say about the Missionvale Chardonnay – the palate shows great balance with juicy fruit matched by appealing toasty oak and fresh acidity. Good texture and a long finish, mature for 3-4 years. The Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay – The palate is rich and full bodied with flavours of citrus, ripe apple, honey and toasty oak, long finish, keep for 2-3 years.
What a fabulous season it has been. During the harsh summer sun in late February with temperatures soaring into the mid thirties – what better way to enjoy your day than in the cool comforts behind the cellar door… tasting our superb range of wines.

Despite our expansive renovations to our tasting facility completed in time for season; it was still overflowing with eager visitors intrigued to hear the stories behind our wines and winemaker Peter Finlayson. Our guests in turn also wanted to share something dear with us, their names... we have had visits from a Mr Finlayson (no relation), Mr Galpin and a Mr Hannibal all from countries worldwide and who were eager to write a message in our visitors book. They all especially enjoyed our story relating to our Italian/French red blend ‘Hannibal’, often mistaken for Hannibal Lecter from the movie, the correct version is a rather clever comparison reverting to our history books when the Carthaginian Military Commander ‘Hannibal’ crossed the Alps on an African Elephant whereby he won three dramatic victories. The commonalities here are Italy and France with the varietals of same origins in the bottle and the African Elephant is a synergy with our winery based in Africa! To ensure that our quality driven wines are available globally, we have agents based in all key countries marketing and selling our entire range. The current range that is available through our cellar door includes Blanc de Mer 2008, Walker Bay Sauvignon blanc 2008, Sans Barrique Chardonnay 2008, Crocodile’s Lair / kaaimansgat Chardonnay 2008, Missionvale Chardonnay 2008, Hannibal 2006, Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2008 and our world renowned Téte de Cuvêe Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2007.

We are proud to announce our latest releases:

Sans Barrique 2008 - Vintage 2008 has proven to be a most successful white wine opportunity and this bottling is no exception. Here is an opportunity for Chardonnay lovers who like their Chardonnay unhindered by the taste of oak. These grapes originate from the same vineyard as the Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay, but only in this instance the wine was not barrel fermented but allowed to age on primary lees for six months. It projects a complex fruit driven structure with excellent mineral overtones which linger on the mid palate. Lively and vibrant with great length and emphatic flavour. It makes a very suitable alternative to Sauvignon Blanc and is delicious with all shellfish, oysters and catch of the day.

Crocodile’s Lair / kaaimansgat Chardonnay 2008 - “Crocodiles Lair” is the translation from the word kaaimansgat which is the name of the farm producing these special Chardonnay grapes. Grown at a high elevation of 700 meters in a blind mountain valley behind the village of Villiersdorp where this location is more reminiscent of the Swiss Alps than a typical South African Vineyard site. These vineyards are without irrigation & they ripen about a month later than elsewhere in the Cape. Vintage 2008 was very late but has still managed to produce another excellent Chardonnay bottling. Characterised by rich mineral and citrus fruit design overlaid with peach & vanilla flavour tones all enhanced by only the best French Oak – 8 months of which 25% is new barrel compliment.

Galpin Peak Pinot noir 2008 - The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley has consistently offered world class quality Pinot Noir wines. A result of an ideal combination of soil and climate – a situation which is repeated year after year. It is claimed that Pinot Noir has no definite varietal characteristic of its own. Its flavour and character are dictated by the soil in which it is grown. Most vintages are preceded by an enthusiastically awaited dry weather build-up to actual harvest. But 2008 vintage was very different, it was a wet season, the soils were never dry and grapes ripened under non-stress conditions. This is no doubt one of the fruitiest presentations of Galpin Peak in many years. It has an appealing fresh fruit structure with accentuated length and elegance on the palate. Fully dry, but soft and gentle with a touch of crispness. Flavours of cherry, blackberry and violets which follows with an earthy spice. It is in harmony with its expectations and does not disappoint in its rich candid finish! Expect increased elegance and softness with aging.
Be it the Classics or an African Marimba band – the sound of a flute, piano, guitar or drum resonating from our candle lit red wine barrel cellar is a great attraction for many Hermanus folk who eagerly await to attend the Hermanus Music Society evenings at the end of each month.

This year we have enjoyed the sounds of Benjamin Dry – an International cellist and Paula Spiegel on Piano who performed pieces from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn. Steve Newman – an Acoustic guitarist extraordinaire who plays the guitar like no other and was the founder of the popular African group Tananas. The Amici String Quartet comprising of Suzanne Martens, Quentin Crida and David Snaith on violin and Peter Martens on cello. Brad Liebl who is a professor of voice at UCT who sang well loved songs in his rich Baritone.

Musicians to look forward to are included in the following line up:
July 31st - Ian Watson on violin on a full scholarship from Glasgow Academy of Music plays together with Marek Pasieczny a professional guitarist and composer.
September 25th - Anthony Hewitt renowned International Pianist returns by popular demand.
November 27th - Karen Leitner and Duccio Lombardi make up this flute and harp duo who have recently returned from touring the Country Homes and Castles of England.

Please contact The Hermanus Music Society 028 312 3006 – Elizabeth - for further information and tickets. A portion of the proceeds from the Hermanus Music Society evenings held at Bouchard Finlayson are donated annually to a Charity cause. As a very generous show of appreciation and heart, the Hermanus Music Society donated r8000 to the Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust, (a very fitting allocation from funds raised in a cellar!)

Building a brand in the USA is a formidable task! The USA is not a country –it is another planet. The cities are expansive and the competition reflects all that America epitomizes. When the door was opened with an invitation to get on board the Grand Tour of Wine Spectator magazine we jumped at the opportunity. This option was presented to us following the strong showing of our 2007 Galpin Peak Pinot which achieved 91 pts in this celebrated magazine. This happening comprises three opportunities to showcase our Pinot noir amongst other international wineries covering the worlds greatest names! From Ornelia to Chateau Lafite , to Stags leap, all were there. The first occasion was at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, south of NY with the second show at the Grand Ballroom on the Navy Pier in Chicago and the last presentation on the 16th May was at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Visitors stood in long queues to be sure to be first at the offerings, when the doors opened we did not stop pouring. It is just wonderful to be in a world where there is such a large contingent of potential buyers and wine supporters! During this three week trip I took advantage of a three day window to re-visit Napa and Sonoma Valley wine regions. This was a return after 15 years where as expected nothing has hindered progress. Here lies more and more serious investment with greater splendour and more magnificent wineries. The surroundings are beautiful (in spite of the fact that it rained all the time) which no doubt adds to image of Californian wine. My three days guided tour generously was hosted by well known celebrated local wine lands photographer, Andy Katz who was exactly the perfect man to look after me!

On this trip I managed a total of fifteen different flights stretching between 27th April and 18th May, I arrived in Houston Texas to present wines on behalf of newly appointed distributors Avante. Then the following day drove to Dallas Texas and repeated the exercise. Must admit that I was quite surprised to discover the southern strip of Texas to be generously green and substantially forested, From Dallas I flew to San Francisco for the Napa visit and thereafter attended two wine dinners in Florida, firstly at Bacchus restaurant in Fort Myers where I had a wonderful welcome, in fact felt like a home coming! The next night was at Jiko’s restaurant in Walt Disney’s African animal theme park. This a full seven course event costing $160 pp with each course being prepared by a different chef. Some of the guests traveled from as far a field as Ohio. At this point I have to mention that I never experienced one disappointing meal throughout my entire tour of the US –this simply attests to the zero tolerance standards here. From Orlando it was to Atlantic City for the first encounter with wine Spectator Grand Tour. Thereafter I took the long haul to Winnipeg Canada for a first visit to a city hungry for good wine. Paul and Shirley Martens from newly appointed agents “Blend” took full advantage of my presence and managed to capture some excellent sales. Fortunately my visit to Winnipeg landed between two snow falls and with the trees not yet showing their leaves I was glad to have landed within the kinder weather window and happy to head south again before experiencing what Canada mostly was about. Next stop was Chicago for the second WS event and then finally to Las Vegas where temperatures were in total contrast to Winnipeg! Hot and dry with hordes of crazy people chasing after that very elusive fortune –a search specifically designed to first land you in debt which I understand not, but there they were, gathering in their thousands, socially engineered to play the craps and any of the many tempting games. Finally I returned home to the southern point of Africa which was like getting off a magic carpet, a magic carpet of a different world , a quieter world called Hemel-en-Aarde or Heaven-and-Earth! Just grateful to have enjoyed the opportunity to share in these wonderful contrasts and I am convinced such contrasts and travel are brilliant elixir’s of the mind and help to make better wines! We look forward to the greater presence of the BF brand in the USA!

We understand in these busy times it is not always feasible for our customers to visit us here in our beautiful valley – so it was my great pleasure to take the wines and the South African Bouchard Finlayson experience to our customers.

I headed to the Northern Hemisphere to the United Kingdom for the annual London Wine Trade Fair and various other marketing opportunities arranged by our UK Agents Seckford Agencies Ltd. for their new world wine producers.

Surrounded by a majestic Castle and quaint cobbled streets – Edinburgh was my first stop. The Great Grog festival hosted by owner Richard Meadows in the Merchant Hall attracted their customers to a fine tasting of our wines. The enthusiasm for our wines is always a joy.

Back in London we were invited by Decanter to participate in the Decanter’s New World Fine Wine Encounter on the 9th May at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London. Only New World wineries considered to meet Decanter’s exacting criteria were invited to pour their wines. The entire day was spectacular with comments like ‘superb wines’ and ‘best pinot noir at the show’. This is an invitation only event that brought together the wineries and winemakers who are blazing an innovative trail into sought after wines.

Off to the country on Sunday to Dedham – Colchester. Tim Ferguson of Promotion Wine Ltd. hosted a mini wine festival and food and wine pairing dinner at Le Talbooth for his customers. Le Talbooth is a family run, luxury country house hotel and award winning restaurant which offers cuisine that is a skilful mixture of the classic and exciting. Our ‘Best new world white wine’ Blanc de Mer 08 translating to ‘white of the sea’ was aptly paired with the delicious Salmon and Avocado terrine. This was the most delightful evening with customers eager to learn about our wines and the stories behind them.

The London Wine Trade Fair 09 attracted its second best overall performance since the Fair began in 1980. Held over 3 days it created the perfect platform to liaise with our valued agents and customers.

On Tuesday night Gerrie and Alan of Vivat Bacchus fame in Farringdon hosted a mini South African wine tasting evening and invited guests to enjoy the wines followed by a food and wine pairing dinner. Our Award winning Galpin Peak pinot noir 08 was paired with pan seared Springbok – the smoky, red cherry flavours complemented the wild game flavours of the venison and there was jovial banter and amusing stories from all producers on the night.

Midweek I hosted a Bouchard Finlayson South African inspired Wine Dinner held at the Red Carnations ‘Best British Hotel’ - The Milestone - in Kensington. An intimate gathering of a fabulous group of guests, enjoying our superb wines paired with the most delicious fare was the recipe for a magical evening. Think of grilled crocodile paired with our wooded creamy Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay or the Galpin Peak Pinot noir’s delicious velvety finesse paired with springbok. All to savour in our thoughts till the next wine dinner.

High Timber Restaurant on the banks of the River Thames provided the perfect setting for a finale to the week’s activities and successes.

The Homestead on Bouchard Finlayson property provides the most spectacular venue with the Galpin Peak mountain range as the perfect backdrop for hosting our customers and agents to a South African Bouchard Finlayson wine tasting. Visitors include our Danish, American, German, Korean and Mauritian agents.

A momentous occasion was one where Peter hosted a luxurious luncheon with Bouchard Finlayson’s Pinot noir as the main theme offering his finest vintage from 1997 through to 2007. Known as the heart-break grape and often referred to as a sensual and elegant lady, she certainly taunted the taste buds and provided much discussion as the flavours lingered. Marlene van der Westhuizen of the Food Studio prepared the perfect menu to complement these iconic wines.

Perhaps our greatest ocean delicacy and rarity – Abalone, paired with the finest South African wines – this idea was hatched post a South African Food & Wine Paring Dinner in Le Mieux Bistro, Hong Kong. Featuring Karan beef, South African abalone and lobster. During this dinner Metro Radio of Hong Kong announced an inward culinary mission to South Africa. The group of 17, which included radio presenters from Metro Radio Hong Kong and culinary and wine experts, visited Abagold Abalone Farm in Hermanus. The celebrity chef from Hong Kong, Mr. Ricky Cheung, prepared some of his signature dishes with live abalone and Bouchard Finlayson wines.

The Crocodile’s Lair Chardonnay label has made its mark on our Dutch agents ‘Wijnimport’ delivery van and now recently onto a table at an avid fans wedding in the UK. Unbeknown to Juliette her father contacted Peter towards the end of 08 mentioning that his daughter and future husband Nick Wright have visited us on several occasions and are great supporters of our wines and vineyard to such an extent that our wine played a large part in their wedding with the top table named “Crocodiles Lair”!

Japan has a rich culture steeped in tradition. However, one of the much loved past times is reading the comic book. We were recently honoured to know that via our Japan Agents ‘Japan Import Systems’ a well known comic called “la sommeliere” featured our prestigious Galpin Peak and Téte de Cuvêe Galpin Peak Pinot noir wines.

The story reads as follows - The heroine is a sommelier trainee who had been engaging in the production of wines in France since she was a child and loves wines from the depth of her heart. One day, a man from the French Agriculture Department whose business focus is the exportation of French wines visits the restaurant with the Japanese wine critics. This man from France believes that French wine is the best worldwide. The heroine decides to serve the man from France and the Japanese wine critics three kinds of wines made from Pinot Noir. They tasted the wines blind and guessed right that the first bottle was Clos St Denis Dujac 1996 and the second one was Cote de Nuits Village Jayer Gilles 2002. At the third bottle, they thought it was Bonnes Mares. Which was incorrect, it was in fact our Téte de Cuvêe Galpin Peak Pinot noir.

One might think that on a comparatively small estate like ours, in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a mecca for world renowned botanists for some 250 years, that there would be few botanical surprises in store. Not so.

The ongoing botanical survey, part of our commitment towards the Biodiversity Wine Initiative, (B.W.I.), is turning up some interesting results.

Pride of place should perhaps go to the discovery of a healthy colony of some 50 plants of the rare and endangered Witsenia Maura, (bokmakierieriet), thought to be locally extinct in the Greater Hermanus area. It belongs to an ancient plant group known as palaeoendemics and was first discovered by the renowned botanist/explorer Carl Thunberg in 1772. The striking yellow and black flowers, at the tips of 3m long shoots leads to its common name, alluding to the similarly coloured Bokmakierie Bush Shrike, also found on the estate. Steps are being taken to ensure the plants are protected and safe from disturbance and it is hoped to monitor them to confirm if they are bird or insect pollinated.

Another interesting find is a lone plant of Salvia granitica, exciting local botanists since it was previously known only from a single specimen collected years ago. Similarly, a single plant of African daisy, Gerbera linnaei was located on a stream bank. Although common in the Cape Peninsula this is the first record of it in our area. Usually only appearing after a fire it will be interesting to see if the species flourishes when next the mountainside burns after the inevitable fire.

Finally, a single specimen of the impressively named Paronomus sceptrum-gustavianus has been seen. A rare 2m high member of the protea family it is usually encountered as a single plant or in small isolated groups. Its common name of King Gustavs Sceptre commemorates its collector, the Swedish botanist Anders Sparrman and his compatriot, taxonomist and father of the binomial system, Linnaeus.

With 170 species collected to date, embracing an impressive 57 families, it is tempting to speculate what other exciting discoveries await. “Watch this space”
